A recent report by the French tax authority provides an analysis of average taxe foncière bills across the country.

The average increase in the rates bill for houses in 2022 was 5.4%, to reach a national average of €949 a year. The average bill for apartments was €786, an increase of 1.6%.

The actual size of household bills will depend on the size, amenities and location of the property, as well as the rate set by the local council.

Although there were variations in the increase between departments, the overwhelming majority had an increase below 3.4%. The largest increases, over 6%, were in Loire-Atlantique, Yvelines, and Bas-Rhin. In some departments, the tax went down marginally, such as in Aisne, Eure-et-Loir, Deux-Sevres, Gironde, Indre, Loir-et-Cher and Vaucluse

The highest average annual taxe foncière bills are in the departments of the Ile-de-France region, averaging €1,168.

At the other end of the scale, those departments with the lowest bills are Indre (€565), Creuse (€580), and the Vendée (€587).

The graphic below gives a cartographic representation of average bills in each department, with those coloured yellow the lowest bills and those in dark blue paying the most.

The following table shows the average figures for each department in 2022. Individual bills will vary by the size, location and amenities of the property.
